Have you ever been asked for your debit card a second time at a fast food restaurant? You know when you hand over your card to the person working at whatever restaurant you are ordering food at and they swipe it really fast and then hand it back to you. Personally I like it when they hang on to it until the transaction goes through. Anyways, this happened to me at a Whataburger. I paid and thought the transaction was handled and I was asked for my debit card a second time from the Whataburger employee. He then took my debit card and said the machine in the front was not working so he went to the back and completed the transaction at the drive-thru window machine processor. I have to admit that I had my eye on the employee since he walked to the back with my debit card and went out of sight for a few seconds.
I didn’t think anything of the transaction but I checked my bank statement online to be on the safe side and I was charged twice for the same amount at the same Whataburger. Turns out the machine in the front did work and it did charge my debit card. I went the next day to speak to the manager and he said that I would have to contact corporate. I mean, this amount is only $10.89. But obviously this is not about the money it’s about the fact that this must happen all over the US. I could easily just let it go and eat the cost but I spend a lot of time and go out of my way to be frugal and giving away money to restaurants is not the way I want to spend my money. Now I know that this was just an accident and Whataburger did not deliberately overcharge me to make money off of me. Today I contacted headquarters as the manager suggested I do so we’ll see what happens.
At this point I think they should do whatever they can to keep customers happy. All I have is my bank statement as proof of the charges. But I learned my lesson, be careful when the person charging you wants to swipe your card again, no matter what the amount.
This same thing happened to me last month after I went to a mechanic shop. The mechanic charged me $15.oo twice and it showed up in my bank statement. The second transaction was removed from my statement after calling the mechanic. I am now going to be more careful when I give out my debit card.
I can recall when a local donut shop started taking plastic. Unfortunately, they got no training on the card swipe, so after swiping it 5 times, I paid for it in cash.
That evening, the Mrs. was wondering why I had gone to the donut shop 5 times! That’s right, he actually was doing it right, and charged me all 5 times. A quick call to our bank had the charges (still pending) removed.
Wendys charged me for the car behind me almost 4x my actual order. Then” so sorry” have to swipe it again. Cash for now on at drive thru-s
